January 25 - February 12, 2027
This exhibition is free and open to all, Monday - Friday 10 am - 4 pm.
The Art of Xinjiang Stamp-Printing is an interactive, community-driven exhibition that features textile samples and stamp-printed artworks from Xinjiang, China alongside materials produced by the community during hands-on stamp-printing workshops and selected print-based work by local artists. The exhibition introduces the cultural history and contemporary development of Xinjiang stamp-printing, a 3,000-year-old textile printing and dyeing process practiced in Uyghur-inhabited regions of China, and brings the tradition into conversation with contemporary printmaking.
By presenting traditional works alongside new creations, the exhibition invites reflection on how heritage techniques evolve in modern contexts, including conversations about sustainability, material experimentation, and cultural continuity.
The Art of Xinjiang Stamp-Printing is curated by JiLei Wu from the China Academy of Art with support from Notre Dame alumna Yingxin (Cindy) Liu, Notre Dame Beijing, and Professor Justin Barfield of the Department of Art, Art History, and Design. Community members are invited to explore the art of stamp-printing and contribute to the exhibition during a series of workshops also led by Wu. Sessions include an introduction to the technique’s historical and visual background, demonstration of basic skills such as block handling and pigment application, and guided hands-on practice.
