Experience the intersection of art and science with The Art of Dentistry, a public exhibition of drawing and sculpture made by Notre Dame, Saint Mary’s, and Holy Cross pre-dental students during a collaborative course co-taught by Kelly Harrington, academic advisor for biology & environmental sciences majors in Notre Dame’s College of Science, and Sandra Ginter, associate professor and department chair in the Department of Art at Saint Mary’s College.
During the course, students develop manual dexterity, observational skills, indirect vision, and fine motor skills needed for their profession through an artistic lens. The American Dental Education Association articulates that dental school is a "demanding environment that involves seamlessly blending science and art." Studying the morphology of teeth through the lens of artistic practice brings an aesthetic and technical discipline to students’ studies that not only enriches their academic experience, but also their appreciation of the shared language of line, form, texture, space, unity, and balance utilized to support the health and expressiveness of the human smile. The resulting exhibition invites audiences to do the same.
After its debut at Saint Mary’s College, The Art of Dentistry travels to Notre Dame’s Jordan Hall and on to a local dentist office.
